"You want a Crash Course on Fridges", Isha laughed, "Sure. As with my tips on using stoves, hot water, laptops and energy saver bulbs, watch your power bill."
"It tells you a lot if you are listening."
“Since the cost of replacing floor coverings in most of the separate areas was individually less than my policy excess, they declined to pay most of the replacement cost on the grounds that each individual event within my claim was uneconomical."
"Interestingly, the assessor had initially confirmed to me that the whole house would be covered and given me the go ahead to get it all replaced quickly to mitigate loss of rent while the house sat untenantable due to damages. The assessor later denied they had given me any verbal confirmations of cover.”
Bank: When she applied for the card, she agreed to and signed its Terms and Conditions.
Relative: Perhaps you could resend her a copy of those. Would you like her new mailing address?
“How black is too black, Pa?” Hosh asked, “How would I know if it is dirty enough to change?”
“Oil turns black pretty quickly,” Rosh smiled, “but that doesn’t affect its quality. Rub a little between your thumb and index finger. If it leaves a dirty smudge, it probably needs to be changed.”
He thought about his father’s future work. Creating and publishing stories – inspired by life.
Creating another Upanishad! A contemporary Upanishad! Perhaps an Upanishad retold!
Would he read it? He knew he would, he loved his father’s stories anyway.
“Have a budget. It helps you determine and set your limits. Stay within your limits. तेते पाँव पसारिये जेती लंबी सौर (tete paon pasaariye jeti lambi saur - meaning stretch your feet only so far as your quilt goes).”
“Isn’t it better to stretch the chadar (expand the capacity, income etc.),” asked Isha, “than to restrict our paanv (our dreams, plans, or expenses)?”
“I won’t forget to smile”, he said, nuzzling her lovingly “as I face my fears. But do you know how to protect yourself against lightning strikes?”
His face was serious again. She didn’t know what she would do when the crash came, but it didn’t matter.
"Eggs are full of goodness anyway, like proteins, vitamins A,B,D and E, lots of minerals and those very important good-for-you fatty acids."
"But why do you keep eggs in a fridge Ma?" Hosh asked as they sat down to eat the French toasts he had just cooked under her supervision, "Will they not keep outside?"
"This layer, called the cuticle or bloom, is still wet when the egg emerges, but quickly dries after a few minutes."
"This stops bacteria from getting inside the shell and reduces moisture and carbon dioxide loss from an egg which could degrade the egg quality."
"Whoopsie," he uttered, as he dropped an egg on the kitchen floor.
"Get salt and give it a good sprinkle," said Isha, "It'll clean up pretty easy. Use salt to scour non-stick pans too, instead of detergent."
"Sunny side eggs are eggs that aren't flipped over when the white portion is fried on one side. So the yolk looks like a sun and is beautifully saucy."
"If you flipped them over when the bottom side was fried and cooked them further depending on your mood on the day, you can get between Over easy to Over hard versions."
"Depending upon the size of the egg, an egg contains about 75 calories or 310 kilojoules."
"But it also has a significantly high satiety effect so you feel fuller for longer – good news if you are dieting."
"To avoid shells cracking when you boil them," she said, "take eggs out of the fridge and bring them to room temperature first. I suggest letting them sit at room temperature for about half an hour before using."
"In baking too, eggs are better used at room temperature."
"Very interesting," Isha laughed, "No. I didn't know that."
"Yea Ma," he said excitedly, "eggs have really clever packaging. A true engineering marvel, that is scientifically cool and technologically functional."
“Come back to me quickly. You can have your Kingdom of Heaven,” she impulsively spoke her thoughts aloud to him.
He winced and thought a little. Then answered with great sadness, “But I can’t go on that journey anymore. I have nothing left to pay the fare.”
"In India, flavoring ingredients such as asafoetida, black salt, sea salt, fresh ground ginger, green mango, green chilies, pepper, lime or lemon juice, Amla (gooseberry), Jira (cumin seeds), coriander, mint and curry leaves are mixed with Chaach to enhance its digestion-aiding properties."
"Traditional buttermilk contains probiotic microbes which are beneficial to the gut and improve immunity when taken regularly."
"Be careful", said Rosh, "Online advertisements can be scams."
"Not for rentals," Hosh was skeptical, "Not on reputable websites. I am only looking at adverts from reputable real estate agencies, and that too for accommodation within my own country."
“If 10,000 pesos is about 20 NZD”, Josh calculated, “he’s just paid a scam artist $160 for a fare that should have been $0.16.”
“That’s not like taking a 100 pesos for an 80 pesos fare”, Isha was gob smacked by the magnitude of the scam, “that’s taking over a 1,000 times more than was due!”
A sign is posted somewhere for a reason. To keep you and others safe on the road.
You don’t argue with a sign. You follow it!
"I'll grant you guys a wish each now, before I go," he said to show them his gratitude, "So long as it is reasonable, you can have anything you want. So tell me, what would you like?"
"I've never heard a Jinn put a reasonability condition on wishes before granting them!" the contractor laughed.
